You get home after a two-hour ride, open MotoLens to check the footage, and it's a blurry shake-fest. Not because of the app. Because the mount turned every engine vibration into a camera tremor.

Mounting is the most overlooked part of getting good dashcam footage on a motorcycle. People spend time researching apps and settings, then zip-tie their phone to the handlebars with a $12 mount and wonder why the video looks like it was filmed during an earthquake.

Here's what actually matters when you're choosing where and how to put your iPhone for MotoLens.

The five mounting positions — and what each one is actually good for

Handlebar center mount. This is the default for most riders, and it works well for a reason. The phone sits at eye level, roughly forward-facing, and you can tap the start button in the MotoLens notification without looking away for long. The downside: handlebar vibration is transmitted directly into the mount, so damping matters more here than anywhere else.

Stem mount. Mounts on the fork stem, below the handlebars. Cleaner look, slightly lower profile, less visible from the front. A bit harder to reach quickly, which matters when you need to start recording from the trip detection notification. Still works fine once you're moving.

Tank/top clamp mount. Lower angle that captures the road from closer to the machine's perspective. Some riders prefer this for a more "motorcycle movie" look rather than traditional dashcam footage. It also picks up more engine vibration than a handlebar position. Worth testing before a long trip.

Ram-style arm mounts. These extend from a fixed bolt (often the mirror mount or a luggage rack bolt) and position the phone wherever you want. Very adjustable, but more to assemble and more points of failure if you don't tighten everything properly.

Chest or body mounts. Not recommended for dashcam use with MotoLens. The frame of view shifts every time you move your body or look around, which makes the footage nearly useless for capturing what's ahead of you. Fine for action video, wrong tool for dashcam.

Vibration: the actual enemy

A phone camera is not designed to absorb the continuous high-frequency vibration of a motorcycle engine. Without damping, your footage will have a characteristic jitter that's exhausting to watch and obscures detail in the road ahead.

What to look for: rubber-isolated ball joints, internal dampeners, or mounts specifically marketed as "anti-vibration for motorcycles." The test before buying is simple — hold the mount rigid and try to shake it. A good damped mount absorbs that shake. A rigid one transmits it straight through.

Some riders add RAM X-Grip adapters with vibration-dampening balls specifically because the basic X-Grip without damping is noticeably shakier on high-vibration engines. Worth the small extra cost.

One thing that surprises people: cruisers and V-twins often have more noticeable low-frequency vibration than inline-4 sportsbikes at the same speed. The damping you need depends on your machine, not just where you mount.

Getting the angle right

Most riders mount the phone flat, aimed at the horizon. For dashcam purposes, that's slightly wrong.

A better default: tilt the camera a few degrees downward from horizontal, so it's aimed at the road about 30–50 meters ahead. This does two things. First, it captures more of the relevant road surface — the lane markings, debris, vehicles stopping — and less of the sky, which changes constantly and distracts from what matters. Second, it makes the footage easier to review, because the important part of the frame is consistent.

Check the angle in the first ten seconds of a test recording. If you see mostly sky and hood, it's pointing too high. If you see mostly asphalt directly ahead of your wheel, it's too low.

Starting recording when your hands are on the bars

This is worth mentioning here because it connects to mount position. When MotoLens detects a trip and sends you a notification, you need to start recording — either by tapping the notification or by saying Hey Siri, open MotoLens.

If your phone is mounted somewhere you can reach it without leaning or looking away, the tap method works fine at a stop or slow speed. Once you're moving, Siri is the better option regardless of mount position. "Hey Siri, open MotoLens" works through Bluetooth headsets or with the phone's mic when there's enough airflow, though you may need to test this at speed with your setup.

For longer rides: power matters

Background video recording is one of the more battery-intensive things an iPhone does continuously. Add GPS logging and you can expect four to six hours of runtime, maybe less in warm weather or with a bright screen on.

A USB-C power cable running from a 12V-to-USB adapter on the bike solves this cleanly. Most modern motorcycles have a 12V outlet or SAE connector near the battery. A small adapter plus a cable routed to the mount keeps the phone charged the whole ride.

One caveat: charging while recording generates heat. On a hot day with direct sun hitting a black phone case and a charging cable attached, you might hit the iPhone's thermal limit faster than expected. Black cases absorb more heat than clear ones — worth considering for summer riding.

Phone orientation: always landscape, never portrait

This sounds obvious until you see a dashcam recording that's portrait. Your lane, the vehicles ahead, the road surface — all of it needs horizontal context. A portrait recording crops off both sides of the lane and misses exactly the vehicles you'd want captured in an incident.

Set your phone horizontally in the mount. If your mount only allows portrait orientation, it's the wrong mount for dashcam use.

Before the ride: the five-second check
